Chad Smart
CO-FOUNDER OF CAPITALWORKS
Chad co-founded the Capitalworks Group and has 24 years of private equity and corporate finance experience and has led the launch of multiple successful funds founded on Capitalworks core principles of partnership, patience, discipline and active value creation. As a member of the Investment Committee for all of the Group’s investment strategies, Chad has played a key role in the deployment of capital across emerging market geographies, investment strategies, sectors and vintages. Chad serves/served on the boards of several Capitalworks portfolio companies including Much Asphalt, Rosond, Rhodes Food Group, and Petmin among others. He previously co-headed Brait Private Equity’s proprietary investment business and served as a Principal of the private equity funds and a Director of Brait Private Equity and Brait South Africa. Chad holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce and an Honours Degree in Accounting from the University of the Witwatersrand and is a qualified Chartered Accountant (SA) and a CFA charter holder.
Robert Katz
CAPITALWORKS & CHAIRMAN OF JALTECH
Robert served accounting articles at Ernst & Young. After various senior financial positions in commerce, Robert moved into the financial services sector. He joined Standard Bank of South Africa in 2001 and served in a number of senior executive positions, including Global Chief Financial Officer for Personal and Business Banking, Managing Director of the Wealth Divisions and Managing Director of Home Loans. In March 2010 Robert was appointed as Chief Financial Officer and, in August 2017, was appointed as the Group Chief Executive Officer of Peregrine Holdings Limited (an asset management and financial services company previously listed on the JSE and taken private following a Capitalworks-led transaction). Robert currently serves in an executive role within Capitalworks and is the CEO of Capitalworks’ Liquid Alternative Investment Management Group. Robert holds a Master’s degree in Commerce (cum laude) and is a qualified Chartered Accountant (SA).
Craig Uren
SENIOR FINANCE EXECUTIVE AT CAPITALWORKS
Craig has been with Capitalworks since September 2022. Having qualified as a Chartered Accountant (SA) with Deloitte and also spent time with Deloitte Los Angeles, servicing clients in various industries. On return to South Africa, he continued at Deloitte as an audit manager before moving onto a Treasury role within the financial services sector and thereafter CFO for a pharmaceutical investment holding group before joining Capitalworks where he manages the Group Finance Team. Craig has a Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Accounting from the University of Johannesburg and is a qualified chartered accountant.
Derrick Hyde

Derrick heads up numerous teams within the Jaltech Group, where he oversees the various teams involved. Jaltech leverages extensively off Derrick’s commercial and structuring expertise, allowing it to offer bespoke structures, products and fund solutions to clients.

Gaurav has extensive experience in financial services, which includes: asset management, domestic and international corporate and project finance, capital structuring and raising, hedging various financial risks and managing investments. He has brought valuable insight to Jaltech and has been crucial in allowing Jaltech to provide a customer centric service offering.

Evaghn has evolved with Jaltech, in various capacities with roles in technical advisory, management and oversight. For the past few years, Evaghn has been responsible for the fund administration operations at Jaltech, where he oversees Jaltech’s administration clients.
Riaan Jacobs
CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER
As Jaltech’s Chief Financial Officer, Riaan oversees the group’s finances and leads the finance and compliance teams, which play a vital role across Jaltech’s fund management business. Riaan is a qualified chartered accountant and spent more than 15 years in Deloitte’s audit and assurance practice, where he gained extensive financial expertise. During his professional services career, he led large, multi-disciplinary teams servicing clients predominantly in the power, energy and resources sectors. His exposure to capital-intensive and regulated environments equips him to further contribute to Jaltech’s financial governance and supporting its growth in the alternative asset investment market.
